DEA Educational Foundation Partnership Continues Youth Fishing Program at LOOP NOLA

Building on the momentum of their previous collaborations, the DEA Educational Foundation and DEA Operation Engage New Orleans recently returned to LOOP NOLA for another round of their Youth Fishing Program. This time, the program welcomed students from Mt. Airy Magnet School on January 15 and William Hart Elementary School on January 17 for a hands-on experience in conservation, outdoor recreation, and community engagement.

Approximately 23 middle-grade students from Mt. Airy Magnet School (grades five through seven) and 32 fifth-grade students from William Hart Elementary had the opportunity to learn casting techniques, fish off the shoreline, and participate in a guided nature hike titled “Wet in the Wetlands.” This hike highlighted the importance of respecting the local environment and gave students a deeper appreciation for Louisiana’s diverse ecosystem.

DEA agents and staff were on site throughout both events, providing support and instruction. From helping bait hooks to demonstrating proper casting form, they ensured every student felt confident and safe while exploring this new hobby. The DEA Educational Foundation enhanced the day by providing a picnic lunch from Subway, which allowed participants to recharge before resuming their outdoor activities.

To celebrate the students’ achievements, each participant received a Certificate of Achievement and a fishing hat—mementos that not only commemorate their successful day on the water but also serve as reminders of the lessons learned.

Colleen Whelan, Amy Danos and Lois Ludwikowski from the DEA Educational Foundation were integral in setting up and facilitating the programs. Their hands-on approach, combined with LOOP NOLA’s commitment to youth development, continues to reinforce the program’s core mission: to encourage young people to embrace positive lifestyle choices and a lifelong respect for nature.

As the Youth Fishing Program continues to grow, these collaborative efforts highlight how community organizations and law enforcement can work together to create meaningful experiences for local youth. By blending outdoor adventure with education, the DEA Educational Foundation and DEA Operation Engage are fostering an environment that inspires students to protect the natural world around them—and to stay on a healthy path for the future.
