DEA Miami Operation Engage Relaunches Soccer Program to Inspire Youth at Orange Blossom Mobile Park

The DEA Educational Foundation (DEAEF) is excited to announce the relaunch of its successful soccer program in partnership with Aurelio Figari under the umbrella of DEA Miami’s Operation Engage. Following a successful first session in Hollywood, FL, the program has returned for a second six-week series, this time at the Orange Blossom Mobile Park in Davie, Florida. Despite some rainy weather, the program kicked off on September 13, 2024, with enthusiastic participation from both students and parents.

A New Location, Same Impactful Mission

The program now serves a broader age range, from elementary through high school, and continues to build on the foundation laid during the first session in Hollywood. The focus remains on using soccer as a vehicle to teach life skills such as teamwork, communication, and respect. Each week, Figari and his team of dedicated coaches—including Luzcarime Figari and Luzcarime Saco Vertiz—work to instill these values while also improving the participants’ soccer abilities. Aurelio Figari, a former professional soccer player from Peru, brings his expertise and passion to the field, while his mother, Luzcarime Figari, and Luzcarime Saco Vertiz play crucial roles in leading the program’s sessions.

This time, weather delays have extended the program through October, but the spirit of the sessions remains strong. The DEAEF and DEA Miami Division visited the program on its launch day, reinforcing their commitment to the initiative by sharing remarks on the importance of making healthy life choices and staying drug-free.

“When the students arrived at the soccer launch, they were eager to start and their faces lit up with excitement! The coaches were just as excited. I think the students will create lasting friendships, making the experience truly special for all.”

Circles of Communication and Teamwork

The first session at Orange Blossom Mobile Park centered around the theme of teamwork, with Figari focusing on the mantra, “Together, we are better.” The program kicked off with an exercise Figari refers to as “Circles of Communication,” where students engage in a warm-up designed to foster personal connections. The kids greet each other, make eye contact, and practice listening, creating a supportive environment from the very start.

Despite the rain cutting the session short, 31 kids and at least five parents attended, totaling close to 40 participants from the community. The coaches were thrilled by the turnout and the dedication shown by the families. Figari and his team introduced basic program rules like respect, kindness, and minimizing distractions, ensuring the space remains a positive one for learning and growth.

Building a Positive Space for the Community

Parents in the community have expressed their gratitude for the opportunity provided to their children through this special space. The sessions, held every Friday, offer more than just soccer practice; they provide a safe, supportive environment where kids can unwind after the week and build meaningful relationships.

Students in this session will also receive soccer balls to encourage continued practice and participation in the sport beyond the program. This initiative continues to foster a sense of community, bringing kids, parents, and coaches together to learn not just about soccer, but about the life skills needed to succeed both on and off the field.

Looking Ahead

As the sessions progress through the fall, the DEAEF remains committed to supporting youth in South Florida through its impactful programs. By blending sports, life lessons, and mentorship, the DEA Miami Field Division and Aurelio Figari are once again making a lasting difference in the lives of young people and their families.
